I earned a BFA in Painting at the Art Institute of Chicago, an MA at the Rhode Island School of Design, an MArch at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a PhD in Architecture at Cornell University. I began teaching at John Cabot University in Rome, where I was living to write my dissertation, on the architecture of Francesco Borromini. I began teaching for Roger Williams University in Rome, and moved to Bristol, Rhode Island, where I have been for the last fifteen years. I have also taught classes at the Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Connecticut, and I was a research professor at the University of Lincoln in the UK for eight years.
